Tight marking and strong defending by Lesley Davis and Ciara McGuigan limited the opportunities Ulster Elks could create, while Claire Parkhill gave her usual captain’s performance with tireless running to close down any half-chances Elks could create. The first goal of the match was scored for Ballymoney by Hannah O’Neill who was ably set-up following clever interlinking play down the right between Sally Stewart-Moore and Lynn Macauley. Ulster Elks were rewarded with a couple of penalty corners towards the end of the first half. Captain Claire Parkhill read the play and intercepted the move before the Elks striker could take her shot. The second corner saw Ulster Elks attempt an ambitious drag-flick towards the top corner of the net, but stand-in goalkeeper Ruth Sutherland palmed the ball clear to keep Ballymoney’s advantage going into half-time. Ballymoney were unfortunate not to score at the start of the second half when Emma Patton’s strike came close. The Ballymoney defence had to maintain full concentration as Ulster Elks fought back as both teams battled for domination. The Elks drew a goal back and despite Ballymoney re-grouping they were unable to find the winning goal. Overall the 1-1 draw was a pleasing result for Ballymoney who are hoping to build on the many positives from the match when they meet Randalstown 2nd XI on Friday evening at the Joey Dunlop Centre.
