Banbridge Ladies Seconds 0

North Down Thirds 1

BANN played host to North Down last Saturday at Havelock Park in a Junior Three league fixture.

Although determined to record their first win of the season, Bann started poorly and were dismayed to find themselves 1-0 down after only three minutes. However, this served as a spur to the local team who were then able to pick themselves up and take the game to their opponents.

The rest of the first half was a fairly evenly contested affair with Bann having perhaps the majority of possession. North Down had a couple of very experienced players who tried to control the game but the Bann players were equal to the task and for the most part managed to keep the visitors at bay.

Some good work down the right flank in particular between Rosie Waddell and Sarah Gamble resulted in Bann being awarded a number of frees in their attacking quarter but they were unable to capitalise on these and Bann remained behind at half time.

A stern half time talk from captain Julie Craig motivated the team to try harder but North Down came out strongly in the second half. Good defending from Wendy Cowan and Claire Ussher in particular prevented any further goals and keeper Cathy Thompson made a couple of fine saves to keep Bann within touching distance.

Bann continued to search for the equaliser and came close on a number of occasions but it was not to be and the match finished 1-0 in North Down's favour.

This was a disappointing result in what was a very frustrating match for the Seconds. The Seconds have a strong squad but more work is required to find the optimum line up to ensure the team gels and improves on what is the 2nd XI's worst start to the season in a number of years.
