RESULTS over the past two weeks have been enough to send Lurgan Seconds to the top of the Junior 1 league.

Their character was called on in the matches against Pegasus 2s and Randalstown 2s. In both games they found themselves behind, but battled back on both occasions. Against Pegasus they fought back for a 1-1 draw and went one better to claim a 3-2 win over Randalstown.

It was vital they claimed all three points against Harlequins at home last Saturday and this they did with a crucial 3-0 win.

Lurgan claimed their first goal on 15 minutes after a short corner initial clearance the ball was fed across the goalmouth where Katie McGowan was waiting and she executed a difficult reverse undercut.

It was end to end stuff with Lurgan just shading the possession and the territory. They capitalised on this seven minutes into the second half when Emma Quinn pounced on a poor clearance and cut into the circle on the left. As the defence were closing in she cracked off a reverse strike into the near corner.

This spurred ‘Qinn’s to greater efforts and Lurgan’s defence earned their stripes. They all defended with passion. Naomi Costley made a couple of excellent saves and both Vicky Donaldson and Lyndsey Andrews were called on to clear off the line.

Having weathered the storm Lurgan cut lose for the final 10 minutes. Ellen Mullen pinging one off the post before the third was Pippa Best’s as after the keeper had saved high to her right Pippa grabbed the rebound and pushed home low before the keeper had recovered.

It still very tight for the top slot and it looks like goal difference could be the telling factor.
