Senior Cowdy team get one over Tandragee

Kenny’s team had secured a brilliant 16-16 draw in the away leg so they were fairly confident that they could finish the job at home. But Tandragee are fearsome opponents and they would not go down without a fight.

The winning target was sixteen and a half points and this is what happened:

Stuart Hunter went out first and played superb golf to beat Adam Brown 7 and 6. Stuart got three and a half points.

Rory Madeley, always dependable, beat James Hewitt 2 and 1 and he too got three and a half points.

Tandragee hit back when Paul Topley beat Jonathan Ward 2 and 1. Jonathan got a valuable half point.

The importance of the next game cannot be underestimated. If Tandragee had won it, they were right back in the contest. Jonathan Shannon fought tooth and nail to keep ahead of Chris McGladdery and he won a brilliant game by one hole up. Jonathan got three points.

The gifted young golfer, Luke Woods, beat Craig Black 4 and 3 and he collected three and a half points.

Things were going in favour of Banbridge but they still needed two points for outright victory. With three games still to come in, it looked a formality.

There was a setback when Jonathan Burns lost to Ross Dutton, only getting a half point.

Kenny had two wily campaigners in the last two positions, Kieran Magennis and Neil Clydesdale.

Keiran recovered superbly from three down after 14 holes to get a half match again Stephan Greenberg.

And Neil Clydesdale beat Neil Cooke 6 and 5 to get three and a half points.

The final score was Banbridge 20.5 Tandragee 11.5.

Kenny Stevenson was rightly very proud of all his players and he is confident that they can go to the final stages of the Senior Cowdy Cup.

Their next opponents will be either Spa or Concra Wood.
