Seniors take a narrow lead in Veterans Cup

BANBRIDGE senior golfers played Killymoon in the first round of the Veterans Cup last Friday.

The match was at home and Banbridge were looking for, at worst, a 3-1 win. The gentlemen from Tyrone had other ideas.

First out were Cecil Johnston (8) and Bobby Geddis (11) against Liam McNeill (8) and Tom Doonan (11). Cecil and Bobby started poorly but finished strongly. They won 2 and 1.

The second pair out were Tony Ewbanks (11) and Tom Fee (11) against Jack Moore (12) and Robin Stevenson (14). Tony and Tom started strongly but finished poorly and they got a half match.

Next it was the turn of Dougie Stevenson (12) and Dennis Lockhart (12) to take on Eric Boyce (14) and Alastair Laird (15). Dougie and Dennis had putting problems throughout and that cost them dearly. They lost 3 and 1.

Finally, we had Sydney Pepper (12) and Ian Boyce (14) against David Shephard (16) and Stuart Gillis (16). Sydney had three birdies in the first five holes, gained the advantage and never let it slip. Ian played his part in an excellent 3 and 2 win for Banbridge.

That leaves the score after the first leg: Banbridge 2.5, Killymoon 1.5. The odds now favour Killymoon but the Banbridge team captain, Jack Bickerstaff, may have a trick or two up his sleeve. We can only hope for the best.
