Shock defeat at Home Terrace

Lurgan B travelled the short distance to Dromore’s Home Terrace green and were shocked by their defeat at the hands of Dromore B who were ahead of the visitors at all stages of this NIBA Division 5 match.

The Lurgan side went with high hopes after their excellent win at Holywood. However, Lurgan B never coped with the veracity of the sustained Dromore attack.

The Lurgan team was twelve shots behind at five ends and was an incredible 43 behind at the midpoint. They tried to come back into the game and while the deficit was reduced Dromore B finished 36 shots ahead to win 103-67 – a dent in the Lurgan’s league winning chances.

Lurgan rinks faced strength and determination from the home rinks and found the drawing lines difficult with the green reacting to the heavy downpours. However the fact is that Dromore B was superior on the day. Bobby Ruddell’s and Eamonn Quinn’s rinks were the only Lurgan ones that came anyway close to getting at least a couple of points which would have been beneficial to Lurgan team’s chase for league honours. From 17– down after eleven ends Ruddell’s rink adopted better to the green and fought hard to take 15 shots off the next seven ends to trail just 19-17. The Dromore rink, skipped by Tom Wilson, succeeded in taking four shots off a long jack at the twentieth end, and although Ruddell’s men won the last end the Dromore rink won 23–19.

Quinn’s rink also found it hard to come to terms with the incessant home attack, skipped by Alan Sudlow, who had a brilliant game on the day. Quinn’s men led 9–7 after the eighth end but dropped a five and a four–shot on the next two ends to trail 16–9. Their chances of gaining a vital league point were enhanced when the Lurgan rink took nine shots off the next three ends to narrow the score to lead 18–17. The Lurgan rink was lost narrowly on most of the remaining closely fought ends but eventually the Sudlow’s rink won 25–20.
