Children and adults attended from Shogun Ju-Jitsu clubs in Antrim, Randalstown, Mossley and Ballymena in a collective community effort to learn “Activity First Aid & Automated External Defibrillation Awareness & Safety”.

Paul Timperley (Shogun Ju-Jitsu National Coach) was thrilled on how the day went; “This was a first class course, one which we all enjoyed thoroughly and we all learned something new, even so a doctor and nurse who took part and are members of our volunteer team.

“The children were especially brilliant as they really went for it and thoroughly took part all day. This course was specifically organised for their benefit and that of their families.

“I have been trained and certified in First Aid for over 15 years working with groups such as St John’s, British Red Cross and Sport NI (NIFAS). As a coach (and also a father) I feel it is vitally important I know, and also my coaching team, how to help a child or adult immediately and correctly if they are hurt, injured or in trouble.

“Now we are helping to pass this knowledge on to our volunteer assistants, Mini-Sensei team and older junior members via the best professional services available.

“It is so important the younger generation learn this life skill as it has been proved they do learn it well enough to save an adult’s life.

“We at Shogun Ju-Jitsu are happy to head and lead this activity in our communities to incorporate as many children as possible in learning and achieving recognised professional First Aid Certification. We had girls and boys as young as 7 years old on the course who did marvellously well! We would strongly encourage ALL sports clubs and community groups to run these courses and do them regularly as it’s to EVERYONE’S benefit.”

“The First Aid Course was taken by professional Instructors from Revive Healthcare Training based in Belfast. Paul comments further; “Well done everyone for working very hard on the day and for giving up their Saturday to attend the course. First Aid is an essential life skill and it certainly shows where the priorities lie of every boy, girl (including their parents) and adult who attended this course, coming from all over the Borough and beyond to do so.

“Mandi Timperley, Manager of SJJI Ireland Clubs concludes; “On researching defibrillation I am unaware of an actual defibrillator being accessible anywhere local in the Rathenraw, Ballycraigy and greater Antrim areas other than the area hospital. This is unbelievable as it is a vital piece of life saving equipment needed in every community, accessible at all times to the public for emergencies. As currently instructed a defibrillator needs to be applied within minutes, in conjunction with CPR, to give the person any chance of recovery from a serious heart attack. If one is accessible locally it gives that person a much better chance of survival until the emergency services arrive at the scene to take over.”
