Skipper hopes for a Happy New Year!

Portrush look odds on favourites for promotion to Senior One, they have secured their place in the New Year’s Day Sussex Regiment Cup Final and they are still in the quarter-finals of the Irish Challenge.

So, is Kerr thinking of a possible treble winning season? “There is still a long way to go,” he said.

“We would love to get back to Senior One as it is about 15 years since we played there and that is our priority.

“It is a bonus to be in the Sussex Final and involved in the Irish Challenge and it would be great to bring some silverware to the club as it has been a while.”

It has been a few years since Portrush actually played in the town, as they are now based along the coast at Ballycastle. The main reason for the move is that Ballycastle High School have an astro pitch and it looks highly unlikely that there will ever be such a facility at Portrush. “I’m 27 years old and I never have played in the town apart from some fun hockey on the old grass pitch.

“I joined the club when it was based in Coleraine and then we moved to Ballymoney, so now we are at Ballycastle,” said Kerr. “There is a great buzz about the club and we now have David Bryce coaching us and he has been a great asset. We also have players coming back from university, but we always need new players, and we know that is difficult because of where we are based.

“Our target is to get promoted and we are on course at the minute and anything else we win along the way will be a bonus.”
