Skipper wants to end on Ravenhill success

FOYLE and Londonderry College captain Aaron Patterson hopes to end his rugby career at the school on a high this afternoon, at the home of Ulster rugby Ravenhill.

The teenagers face Grosvenor Grammar School in the final of the Northern Bank Ulster Schools Bowl (KO 2.30pm) and are looking to win this competition for the third time in four years.

Foyle secured the Bowls title, which only started in 2000/03 season, in 2006 and 2008, with Patterson himself involved in that last success a couple of years ago.

Patterson can't wait to strut his stuff at this year's prestigious final at Ravenhill.

"We are all absolutely looking forward to the final, I think all our hard work we put in this year has really paid off and hopefully everything goes well on the afternoon," he said.

"We have won it twice so hopefully we can win it for a third time."

Patterson admits he doesn't know much about today's opposition but is expecting a tough encounter.

"We don't know very much about them to be honest but hopefully it's going to be quite a battle and because it's at Ravenhill everyone is going to be up for the final."

The open side flanker who will be playing his final competitive game for the school wants to end on a high note.

"For me personally the aim this season was to get to Ravenhill so now that we have done that, let's make it a win," he added.

"There are around seven or eight other boys and this will be their final competitive match for the school so we want to end on a positive note.

"I have been lucky I played in the final a few years ago and the experience was immense, I'm now just looking forward to today's final and I'm looking forward to playing with the boys for one last time."

Last year Foyle girl's hockey team secured the Belfast Telegraph/Bank of Ireland Senior Schools' Cup, while in June the boy's cricket team landed the Ulster Bank Schools' Cup Cricket and Patterson admits the buzz in and around the school is similar to last year.

"The cup final is the talk around the school and everyone is wondering will they be able to get to Belfast and watch the match. I think there'll be a few hundred coming up to cheer us on," concluded the Foyle captain.
