Sky Blues are spot on

NEWBUILDINGS United entertained Magherafelt Sky Blues in their first league game of the season which proved to be a very even affair with the only goal of the game coming from the penalty spot and going to the visitors.

Right from the first whistle the Waterside men showed their intention and had an effort from Robinson saved in the first minute by the away keeper.

The game ebbed and flowed but both defences were on top. A corner to Magherafelt failed to be cleared and the ball dropped nicely for McMaster who chipped it towards the onrushing forward; in trying to clear the danger Blair was harshly adjudged to have handled the ball.

The penalty was converted to put the away side in the lead.

Just before the break United put pressure on the away team and were nearly rewarded when Robinson curled the ball towards the top corner only to see the keeper touch it around the post.

The second half saw United push for the equaliser, with the Sky Blues playing on the break. United's pressure was paying off with chances falling to B Scanlon who volleyed over the bar from eight yards, Robinson setting up D Scanlon to tap in only for a last ditch tackle to thwart him, and King missing the chance of glory when he managed to hit the post from close range with the goal at his mercy.

Newbuildings battled to the end putting the visitors’ rearguard under intense pressure but they held firm to record their first league win at Newbuildings.

This weekend Newbuildings are away to near neighbours Roe Valley in the league.
