Slick Garvey hit eight as they outplay Dublin opponents in Irish Cup

Garvey progressed to the 3rd round of the Irish Cup with a very impressive display of slick hockey, totally outplaying Dublin side Corinthians by 8 goals to 1 at Comber Road.

Fielding a full strength team including the return of Timmy Cockram, Garvey attacked the visitors with a series of fast raids and were rewarded as early as the 3rd minute when Cockram burst down the right wing and along the bye line before his pass was slipped into the Corinthians net by Andy Williamson.

Garvey continued to keep Corinthinans on the back foot and in the 12th minute they forced a penalty corner and after Cockram’s drag flick was well saved by keeper Murray, Johnny Bell smacked home the rebound with a clean strike from 10 yards out on the left.

Andy Willliamson had a great chance to increase the lead in the 14th minute but his shot screwed past the post.

Minutes later Corinthian’s keeper Murray was again in action with a series of point blank saves to keep the score down to 2-0.

However, just before the half time interval, Garvey did score the vital third goal; it came again from the right when Andy Frost crossed the ball for James Dowling to shoot past Murray from close range.

With a comfortable 3-0 lead at the break, Garvey were well and truly in the ’box seat’.

However, they did not relax for a moment and their pressure was rewarded in the 38th minute with their 4th goal.

Johnny Bell found himself on the right wing and his cross was met by Andy Williamson who directed the ball past Murray.

Two minutes later, with the Corinthian’s defence in tatters Daniel Buser had acres of space to slap the ball past the helpless Murray to take his team into a 5-0 lead.

Andy Forrest could well have added number six in the 43rd minute but it took just another two minutes before Andy Williamson again with room to spare finished off a move begun by Richard Arneill on the right.

A slack piece of marking in the 45th minute allowed Corinthians to pull back a goal through Ian Stewart but Garvey immediately with their 7th strike.

It was scored by Daniel Nelson with the goal of the game, shooting past Murray with an stoppable reverse stick shot form wide on the left of the circle.

The Corinthians defence was almost non-existent at this stage as Garvey seemed able to walk into the circle at will and it took the visitors best player, goalkeeper Ross Murray to stem the flow of goals.

He saved twice from James Lorimer at Garvey’s second penalty corner but could do nothing with Garvey’s 8th goal, set up by Timmy Cockram and scored by Andy Forrest to finish off a great performance by the home side and a crushing 8-1 victory which takes them through to the quarter final stage against Cork Church of Ireland at Comber Road in December.
