SLIDESHOW: Ulster Elks get back on track

A Kirstie Lammey goal and a Megan Frazer double secured maximum Premier League points.

Played in freezing conditions at Mossley, it was touch and go whether the game would go ahead, however, the wintry rain saved the surface.

Lammey opened the scoring after she broke into the circle from the left before producing a reverse-stick shot over the top of the sliding goalkeeper.

Although the students arguably had the majority of possession, the hosts could have easily been ahead in the opening exchanges. The best opportunity came when a soft pass around the back by the Elks’ defence was intercepted, but ‘keeper Rebecca Davidson came out on top in a one-on-one.

The Newtownabbey girls had an abundance of penalty corners but struggled to make them count until the closing stages of the first-half when Megan Frazer beat the first runner from a breakdown and despatched her shot into the bottom corner.

As conditions deteriorated, the game ebbed between periods of quality creative play, to spells of basic errors and mistakes.

Davidson was largely a spectator in the second-half and her opposite number couldn’t complain about the workload as neither team flattered in the final third.

However, Megan Frazer did hit the post before killing the game off with her second goal, and the students’ third, with six minutes to go.

This weekend the Ulster Elks face Belfast Harlequins in the Premier League.
