Smyth enjoying life in the Port

FORMER Ireland player Jackie Smyth admitted a good pal's persuasive powers lured him to Portrush this season!

Smyth raised more than a few eyebrows when he made the move from the successful Provincial Bowling Association’s championship winning side, Cookstown, to join up with international skip Ian McClure at Ramore Head.

And they got off to the best possible start by reeling in six points from a potentially banana skin opening home fixture against Dunluce.

Smyth certainly played his part as he enjoyed a 26-14 win over Barry Kane.

“I can honestly say I parted company with Cookstown in the best possible terms,” said Smyth, who last represented his country in 1995.

“Basically, Ian and I are best of mates and he encouraged me – as he has done for some years – to team up with him at Portrush.

“Cookstown have really blossomed over recent years, winning the Provincial title for the past three seasons, but I just felt the time was right to make the move.

“We had a great start beating Dunluce. Hopefully that will continue. Young Robert Allen, who was playing second in my rink, was undoubtedly the man of the match – he had a super game.”

If Smyth’s past record is to be used as a yardstick, he’ll be at Portrush for the long haul.

He added: “I’ve been 30 years in bowls – 15 with Magherafelt and 15 with Cookstown and I’ve enjoyed every minute.

“It means extra travelling (joining Portrush), but I don’t mind that. I’ve got a house in Bushmills, so I’ll probably stay there at weekends. It’s a new challenge and I’m looking forward to it.”
