SNOOKER: Several teams vying for top spot

It’s proving to be one of the tightest Larne and District Snooker League battles in years with only nine frames separating the top 12 teams.

At the top St Comgall’s, Greenbank ‘A’, Carrick ‘A’ and Ballyclare ‘A’ all suffered shock defeats although these were due to the handicaps.

In Friday night’s games St Comgall’s lost 4-1 at home against St John’s with C. O’Toole being the only winner. Damian Todd, Andy Reid, Bill Blackburne and Dougie Long took frames for the visitors.

Ballyclare Golf Club ‘A’ lost 3-2 away at Ballyclare Old Boys. Neil McKelvey and Trevor Mairs won the last two but only before Chris Todd, Joe Lennon and Noel Vennard got their team off to the best of starts.

Carrick Golf Club ‘A’ sit at the top, a point clear of the chasing pack of five. Gavin Baker with a break of 40 and Ricky Bradley with a 28 won the last two frames to save themselves from a whitewash against The Point. Aaron McKee (31), S Girvan (25,27) and Gary McNeill (25) secured the victory for the Larne men.

Greenbank ‘A’ went down 4-1 at neighbours Carrick Golf Club ‘B’. Davy Douglas won the only frame for the visitors with Jim Greene, Harry Wade, Colin Spence and Tommy Bond securing the golfers’ fifth victory of the campaign.

Latharna made it seven wins this year with a 3-2 victory at Ballyclare-based Linfield. Raymond Weir, Billy Millar and Neil McFayden took frames with Gary Rutherford and Billy Parke winning for the hosts.

Larne Legion took advantage of the handicap system to secure their first win of the season. Andy Lilly continued his winning form with breaks of 32 and 25. William Irvine and Lee Topping also recorded successes, with Andy McIntyre and Ronnie West responding for the golfers.

Ballylumford also recorded a 4-1 win against Greenbank B.

The officers and committee of the league would like to wish all its members and friends a merry Christmas and a happy and peaceful New Year. The league resumes on January 8.
