So close but yet so far for Banbridge in the Mixed Foursomes

The qualifying rounds for the GUI Mixed Foursomes were played at eight different venues last Sunday and it was to be a heart-breaking afternoon’s golf for the Banbridge side who came so close to putting their name in the hat for the knockout stages.

The Banbridge team travelled to the beautiful links course at Ardglass - a track that would test even the best golfer.

The team captains, Sean McGreevey and Fionulla Crossey selected a very strong team but they were well aware how fickle a game foursomes is.

As it transpired, it would take three 75s and a 74 to qualify for the knockout stages. Banbridge came perilously close.

Colin Wilton and Mary Joe Thompson got Bann off to a marvellous start with one of the best scores of the day, carding a very impressive nett 68 around the tough course in the hardest of formats.

Cathal O’Neill and Denise McBrien played very steady for a nett 77.

Seamus Rooney and Mary Longmore battled bravely for a nett 79.

They needed a nett 75 from one of the two remaining pairs to secure one of the four qualifying spots.

It was possible but it did not happen. Martin McAleenan and Fionulla Crossey had a nett 80 while Harry Shannon and Mildred Hodgett had a nett 82.

It was close but still a heart-breaker.

The four qualifying teams were Ardglass 288, Spa 296, Rockmount 297 and Tandragee 300.
