Social and veteran hockey proving a huge hit

FOLLOWING the end of last season's senior hockey competitions, Ballymena hockey club always run 2 months of fun hockey for junior members of the club before the summer holidays.

The club decided to see if there was an interest in adults enjoying some similar fun and fellowship of their own at the showgrounds but they perhaps didn't realise the amount of response they would actually get.

Not only did they see numbers in the 30s and 40s appearing out, but many wanted to continue throughout the summer months too.

Now that the season has got underway again for the men's and ladies' senior teams, the social hockey is continuing to turn up with some staying on to train with senior members. In fact five ladies have made the transition onto senior teams themselves.

This social group consists of men and women who have not played for a number of years, some haven't played since their school days. Likewise there is a spectrum of abilities turning up, but with the focus being on the recreational aspect of the sport, all gel together on the pitch and are reluctant to be split.

The excitement of seeing a renewed love for the sport from adults rather than school children for a change, will not only make a difference to senior teams but the ladies veteran team is starting up again in a couple of weeks time, having been missed from the club for a few seasons, and competition to get involved is likely to be fierce!

There is still plenty of room for more adults out there to come along on a Tuesday night from 6-7pm at the showgrounds and get involved.

You never know who you might run into from your past but whether it's to rekindle old friendships or make new ones, there will be plenty of craic to get you hooked on the sport.
