Son claims Captain's Prize

FOYLE Golf Club Captain Mr Gary Jackson staged his Captain's Day on Saturday, July 24, and enjoyed excellent weather for his big day.

And the high esteem he is held in at the club was shown by the magnificent turnout, with 210 plus members and guests taking to the pristine Ballyarnett fairways. With the greens running true and fast along with the Captain's superbly organized day everything was in place for a very enjoyable competition.

The stage was also set for impressive scoring and it took a break of tie to decide the winner and produce an historic victory for the Captains son Frankie Jackson (21) whose superior 24 points on the back 9 gave him the coveted title and his fathers Captain's Prize, with Damien Martin (6) producing a one under par round to finish runner up - both players on 43 points. Third was Chris Lynch (7) after he scored 42 points.

Another highlight on the day was a Hole-in-one at the par three 13th where Richard Burton played the perfect 5 iron to hole out for his ace witnessed by playing partners Stephen McCaul, Colin Doherty and James Meehan.

In the category 0-11 Brendan Barr (8) came out on top with 40 points, Gavin McDonnell (16) with 41 points won the category 12-16 anbd Gary Etherson (17) with 41 points claimed the category 17+.

The front nine after a BOT finish went to Odhran McKinney (18) after he scored 21 points and Paul Nicell (18) with 24 points won the back nine after another BOT finish.

Kevin Doherty (14) with 37 points won the visitors prize and George Fitzpatrick (18) with 40 points won the past captain’s prize; Daniel Deery (13) with 40 points won the Juvenile section.

Florence Rankin (24) with 40 points claimed the ladies competition, second after a BOT finish was Myra Gough (18) after she scored 37 points with Margaret McCarron (24) also on 37 points was third. The CSS was 38 points.

The Captain’s nine hole scramble and putting competition on Friday evening attracted a large turnout of 18 teams with excellent scoring.

Alison Elkin, Maurice Temple, Stefhan McKinney and Niomi Hamilton was first after they scored 25.25; second was Stephen Martin, Ruari O'Connor, Mark McKeone and Denise Callan after they scored 27.2 points and third spot went to Nigel McIlmoyle, Gary Jackson (Captain) and Christine McCafferty (Lady Vice-Captain) after they finished with 27.8 points.

In the putting competition David Vail -5 after a putt off with Cormac McGeady.
