South bounce back in style with fine away win

Campbellians 0

South Antrim 3

A glorious Saturday afternoon saw a return to league action for South Antrim following Wednesday’s disappointment in the Linden Cup.

South Antrim were looking to bounce back from this result with a win away to a very solid Campbellians side.

Both sides started quite slowly which was understandable given the heat at the start of play. After the early slow start both teams gradually came more into the game with both sides creating opportunities to score but being quite wasteful in front of goal. However, before half time South Antrim produced a stunning passing move which gave Adam Glass the opportunity to send South Antrim 1-0 up from the most ludicrous of angles.

The second half started as the first half had ended with yet more South Antrim pressure. Very shortly after the restart South Antrim were 2-0 up thanks to some great skill by Darren Hutchinson who went past the Campbellians defensive line before squaring it to Mark Conn for an easy tap in back post. The momentum was with South Antrim and they continued to create chances with some great work from the midfield moving the ball quickly thus tiring the Campbellians side. However, South Antrim were unable to convert any of these chances.

South Antrim finally did score the third goal and virtually seal victory about 10 minutes from the end after a bouncing ball in the circle fell to Timmy Crean who launched the ball into the goal almost taking the head off teammate Paul Maguire with the effort. The remainder of the game turned into a slightly scrappy affair as both teams struggled to cope with the heat of the day. Despite this South Antrim’s lead never looked to be in danger as they played out the last few minutes to claim a solid victory away from home and a second clean sheet of the league campaign.

After a very solid performance by the men in red and black, their coach John Massey will be hoping that they continue this impressive start to the league campaign and carry the confidence of this win into their next fixture against Antrim in the Linden Cup.
