South Fifths take Minor Cup semi final to extra time

South 5ths 1

Annadale 3 (AET)

South Fifths travelled to Loch Moss on Saturday to play Annadale Fourths in the semi final of the Minor Cup.

South knew this would be a tough match against a team currently top of the league above and only having lost two matches all season.

South, having push back, went on the attack and within three minutes were 1 -0 up. Jack Farrell received the ball inside the South 25 before laying the ball off to Stewart Barnes. Barnes went on one of his trademark attacking runs, played a 1-2 with Archie Collins before finding McElhinney at the top of the circle who blasted the ball into the back of the net.

Five minutes before half time Annadale broke down the right and a defensive mistake resulted in the Annadale centre forward getting the ball on the penalty spot and sliding the ball into the net to draw the sides level.

The second half saw chances created by both teams with South forcing saves from the Annadale keeper and even hitting the post twice. However, neither side managed to get the winner with normal time finishing 1-1.

In extra-time, Annadale’s larger squad paid off and with the South team tiring Annadale broke through and scored. South, knowing they only had two minutes to equalise, pushed forward but this let Annadale through to score their third. Credit goes to the South team for a determined performance in forcing the match into extra time against such strong opposition.
