South ladies exit Cup

South Antrim Ladies Firsts travelled to Bangor to compete in the first round of the Cup match.

The ladies started strong, working tirelessly up the wings making fantastic passes but Bangor was not letting up making the South defence work hard with Emma Kay and Sarah Neill providing a solid centre defence. Bangor had chances early on in the match but goal keeper Courtney Mills kept them at bay making excellent saves. All players were suffering from the hard and heavy rain with numerous players slipping and sliding on the pitch surfaces but Ruth Young managed to break through defence with a well-executed through pass from Claire White, breaking the deadlock and making the score 1-0 to South. The victory was short lived when Bangor took advantage of a penalty corner and levelled the score.

Both teams had plenty of scoring opportunities but none were converted to goals and tensions started to rise with special mention to Jo Clarke and Wendy Li in defence for saving 2 goals off the line. All this was not enough as the game went to penalties with the girls missing two flicks and the Bangor keeper managed to save one. It was a tough defeat to swallow but everyone played fantastic hockey and credit goes to Bangor for taking the girls right to the wire.

Joint Players of the Match goes to Emma Kay and Zara Carson.
