South Ladies Firsts earn a fine draw against a top three side

Another home match for South Antrim Ladies Firsts and after last week’s performance, the ladies were hoping to achieve something from a Newry Firsts team who are top 3 in the league.

The ladies started the match fantastically, making flawless passes between the mid-field and forwards. There were early chances from South gaining penalty corners but Newry are a top 3 team for a reason.

Newry attacked the South goals but Courtney Mills was always there to maintain a clean sheet. The South defence learnt from their mistakes and marked very well not allowing Newry to strike cleanly.

South had a chance to go 1-0 up when young Rachel Sullivan was one on one with Newry’s keeper but was pushed to the ground resulting in a penalty flick to be taken by South. Ruth Young stepped up to take the shot but narrowly missed, hitting the post.

Tensions were high during the second half when Newry players were getting frustrated and one of South players was given a green card but the team were determined to not let Newry win. South pulled it off with a 0-0 draw. Player of the Match was awarded to Alannah Richardson.
