Spartans in Shield win

SPARTANS lifted pool’s Brian Brady Memorial Shield title this week defeating The Pirates 4-1 in the final.

The competition, organised by the Carrick and District Pool League, brought the best out of the Tommy Maguire’s team as they defeated rivals Castle, 4-2 in the semi-finals. Kenny English secured the sixth frame with a fantastic clearance.

The Pirates edged past ladies’ side Dolly Mixtures in a deciding frame in the other half of the draw courtesy of a neat finish from Sam Millar. D. Walker, L. Ruddock and K. McCormick each registered wins for the ladies.

In the final Spartans went 2-0 up thanks to wins from S. Burns and Stephen McWhirter but The Pirates pulled one back with a good finish from skipper R. McMurtry.

The first Doubles match was crucial and it went to Spartans pairing of Burns and McDowell in a frame which lasted 30 minutes.

Spartans then clinched the best-of-seven match when the partnership of R. Hawkins and D. Lowe won the next doubles clash to win the trophy for the fourth time in six years.
