Sponsor boost for starlet Conor

THE potential of local youth cyclist, Conor McAteer of Bann Valley Road Club has been recognised recently through financial support from two local businessmen, including the club’s main sponsor Michael Clarke of M. Clarke and Sons Contracts.

Having previously won Irish road race and time trial championships at under 14 and under 15 level, Conor has now displayed a talent for the separate discipline of track cycling by winning gold in the 3,680m under 16 Scratch Race at last Saturday’s Irish Youth Track Championships, which took place at the Eamonn Ceannt Stadium, Sundrive, Dublin. Though a newcomer to the track, having had only three previous training sessions at Orangefield track in Belfast, Conor competed in all three track championship events, also taking bronze in the 500m Time Trial and qualifying for the ride off for bronze in the Sprint event (which will take place on 11 September).

Conor’s busy cycling season is not finished just yet, with the Ulster Youth Road Championships in the Limavady area on 21 August and the Irish Youth Road Championships in Roscommon on 27-28 August.

Conor, who attends St. Louis Grammar School, is also aiming to get selected for the Ulster team to compete in the UK Inter Regional Track Championships at the Newport velodrome, Wales on 16-18 September.

No doubt the recent financial contribution will help defray some of the costs of ensuring Conor’s continued development and racing.
