SPORT: Calling all teenagers: it's time to NRGIZE

COLERAINE Borough Council's NRGIZE Club, which is specifically geared towards young teenagers, returns on Saturday, February 6.

'NRGIZE' is a fun sporting, recreation and social environment for the Borough's young teenage boys and girls which is unique to Coleraine. Not all young people are members of sports specific clubs, so Council designed NRGIZE to bridge that gap.

Roger Downey, Sports Development Officer at Coleraine Borough Council explained the concept.

"NRGIZE is a genuine sports and recreation club, however, it is not aimed at the potentially talented or elite young sports performers and is not designed to create such," he said.

"Instead it provides young people with the chance to interact socially using sport and recreation activities whilst playing comfortably at their own respective levels, with hope that each club member finds his or her own personal enjoyment from the many activities on offer. "This is relatively new and exciting territory and Council is privileged that Coleraine Lions is supporting what we are trying to achieve here in Coleraine."

Coleraine Lions President, Eamon Brolly, said: "We are delighted to support this Council initiative which was designed to benefit the young people of the town. Whilst Coleraine Lions is part of a worldwide Lions movement we are particularly active and interested in supporting local initiatives."

There are many activities on offer from scaling a mobile climbing wall, taking part in a soccer am challenge to archery. From week to week new and invigorating games will be introduced from the old favourites of badminton and table tennis to basketball and volleyball, with dance, boxercise, soccer circuits, dodgeball and spinning also available.

Club members will also have the opportunity to decide what activities they want to see provided and these will be 'actioned' where possible.

But it's not all sport and physical activity based. Video games are a regular feature of this sports development initiative. Made available is a purposely adapted 'gaming station' where NRGIZE will host Nintendo Wii, Playstation 3 and XBOX 360 games and challenges each week, where members can play against their friends to win prizes.

Roger Downey, added: "Game consoles play a huge part in today's society and this new and innovative idea of incorporating them into a sport and recreation club comes from the hope that a few gamers will discover through NRGIZE the fun and sense of accomplishment sport offers, have a go, get hooked and commence a journey of lifelong participation."

NRGIZE meets each Saturday, commencing on Saturday, February 6 from 10:00am to 12:00pm at Coleraine Leisure Centre (excluding dates around public holidays). Club membership costs an initial one-off payment of 10, which includes an exclusive club Hoodie and membership card and then just 3.00 per week thereafter.
