SPORT: Leisure centre and stadium for Rugby Avenue?

COLERAINE could be in a line for a new leisure centre at a major sports facility on Rugby Avenue.

Plans have been in the pipeline now for a number of years for a new stadium at Rugby Avenue, but it seems now, a new leisure centre and artificial pitches could also be built at the out of town site.

As we reported last month, councillors were outraged at news that the Milk Cup finals could be moved out of Coleraine due to the introduction of new legislation on ground capacity.

Councillors were told that a report was due this month on the Rugby Avenue site, and it's potential to house a new stadium.

On Monday, Coleraine Borough Council confirmed that it had recently advertised to obtain expressions of interest for a feasibility study to be carried out.

The study will look at the site, for 'future leisure provision' and will accertain if it is viable for leisure facilities.

A statement, from Coleraine Borough Council, said: "The facility may include a new Leisure Centre, community sports stadium and associated artificial pitches."

As yet, no discussions have yet taken place and no decisions have been made.
