NIPA Section B Meeting – A meeting for the NIPA Sect B Club Delegates & Officials has been set for the Harryville HPS Clubrooms on the Antrim Road next Tuesday 4th February at 8.00pm.

This will be the opportunity for the local members to have the NIPA Agenda explained in detail along with the proposed race programmes for both old birds and young birds. The Harryville Clubrooms will also be the venue for the AGM of Mid Antrim Combine, Wednesday 12th March at 8.00pm.

February Clearance Sales –

A Complete Clearance Sale has been booked for Mick Purcell, a former winner of the NCC One Loft Race in Coleraine. Chimney Corner Football Club in Antrim is the venue for the sale in two parts, Friday 14th February at 8.00pm with BOV at 7.00pm to be followed by the second part on Saturday 22nd February at 3.00pm, with BOV at 2.00pm.

This is not a great time for a sale but due to emigrating to Australia Mick must sell all of his stock.

On offer will be the very best of Ype Hemstras, Soontjens, Van Loon, Janssen, Herman Ceusters etc.

Due to ill health a Complete Clearance Sale is to be held for Trevor Greenaway of Gilford & District.

In two parts the sale will be held in the Banbridge British Legion on Thursday 13th February and Thursday 20th February at 8.00pm, birds on view from 7.00pm.

Sale will include stock from a number of top lofts, Soontjen through Frank Sheader and Trevor Ford, Vandenabeele from Harmony Lofts, Willie Tass, Drum lines from Cock Crow Lofts, Terence McCrudden, son and daughter of the famous 147 of John Patterson which has already bred a 1st Open winner.

Mixed Martial Arts Club members hoping to take Antrim by storm

On Sunday the 16th February a team of fighters from the Ashcroft Vale Tudo mixed martial arts club will compete in the Akuma fighting championships in Antrim.

The competition will feature some of the top amateur fighters from across Ireland as they compete using the various disciplines of boxing, judo, kick boxing and jiu-jitsu in the cage in front of what is expected to be a capacity sell-out crowd.

Over the last 6 weeks, the training has been intense for the fighters as they attend the Ballymoney, Coleraine and the Ballycastle sections of the club as well as putting in their own hard work on the hills and roads of north Antrim.

Ballycastle fighter Owen Kinney is competing as part of a title eliminator event where he hopes to add another coveted accolade to his Cage Gods Irish title that he won in December last year.

Ryan Lowry, Ruairi McCarthy and Michael Duggan are also featured on the fight card against top-class opponents as they look to increase their standing the mixed martial arts rankings.

Alan Ashcroft, AVT head coach, said:“What’s been great in the build up to this fight is the team element. Although you compete on a one to one basis, you have to have training partners and a team around you to get you ready and all of our members have stepped up to the mark.

“Attendances are great and the build up to the fights has seen a great atmosphere at all our club nights.

“We’re focused on winning and we want to win, but we also want to be ambassadors for the sport to show how hard you have to train, how much you have to learn and how humble you should be as part of it. I’m confident of victories on the night.”

As well as a great team element to the preparation, there appears to be a host of support for all the fighters as buses have been booked to take the AVT fighters fans to the event.

Mark Donald, assistant coach at AVT, added:“It’s great that so many people from across the community come to support the fighters.

“They know how hard they have to work to get ready to compete and that cheer from your family and friends can make the difference between winning and losing”

The club also stages wrestling and submission grappling training as well as Judo through the Causeway Judo club too.

Springwell’s Andrew Dowey and Ross Armstrong travelled to the Yorkshire moors on Saturday for the Rombalds Stride. The 23 mile challenge takes place each year on the first Saturday in February. Andrew completed the course in 3:38 and Ross in 3:52.

On Saturday 25 January, St Patrick’s College, Dungiven welcomed nearly one hundred and fifty runners to the inaugural running of their 10K road race.

North Belfast Harriers’ Brendan Grew was a dominant force breaking the tape in 35:36 to secure a comfortable victory. Dermot McElhinney (Sperrin Harriers) finished second in 36:23 and North Belfast Harriers, Paul Horan, recorded a new personal best of 37:21 for third.

Karen Alexander (Sperrin Harriers) led the ladies home in 38:32 with Denise Toner (Clones AC) second in 39:40, and Springwell’s Gemma Turley third in 40:36.

Portrush Parkrun

For the first time in 76 parkruns the conditions got the better of the Portrush course, forcing the runners had to tackle an alternative route.

The high tide and swelling waves left no beach for the run.

The alternative course started at its usual point proceeding out of the car park and up past Royal Portrush Golf Club, turning at Alexander Antiques and returning along the same route.

Springwell’s Bryan Edgar led the 29 runners home in 18:55 with teammate Sonia Knox leading the ladies home in a PB time of 19:36.

Springwell’s Christopher Millar was one of the four first timers (three of whom had never completed any parkruns before).

There were 3 PB’s and a visitor from Wallace Park parkrun.

The Milburn school boy needs treatment for Cerebral Palsy but that treatment is only available in America. The Parkrun will go ahead as n

ormal and incorporate the fundraising event.

Parkrun tourists Alistair Shaw ran 19:12 at Waterworks Parkrun and Catherine Pinkerton Moore ran 24:22 at the Derry Parkrun.
