Sporting success for High School girls

OVER the last couple of weeks Cookstown High School Girls have been making progress in some of the less publicised ladies sports, Lacrosse and Football. The girls have been working on developing their skills in both these sports both in school time and also after school with a large interest in the two activities.

Last Friday the girls participated in a lacrosse tournament in association with the active communities in Cookstown where they played against Holy Trinity in a very wet and miserable day. Girls from both schools were not to be deterred by the weather and everyone approached the games with enthusiasm and competitiveness. There were excellent displays of teamwork from the two sides and some very impressive catching and passing from the modified lacrosse sticks. Cookstown High School just managed to pip Holy Trinity to the post winning 3-2 in the last seconds of the final match, to win the tournament, congratulations CHS.

Then on Wednesday 18 girls travelled to Rainey Endowed to play in a football tournament. There were 3 sections for years 8, 9 and 10 and Cookstown High School were able to field a team in both year 9 and year 10. The tournament was organised to try and develop and encourage girls football and it certainly did. The sun was shining and the girls from all schools were playing some great football. There were some amazing last ditch tackles from Magherafelt High School, well struck goals from Rainey, some maizey runs from Sperrin Integrated whilst Cookstown High School showed good team work and communication. In the Year 9 section the girls defended very well and didn’t lose any matches, which was very impressive for a team with some Year 8’s who had never played together before. This resulted in them coming second narrowly missing out to Rainey. The Year 10s were in a very tough league. They also had some players a year young but they approached their league with maturity and strength. Cookstown produced some good results scoring several goals, making several vital saves and demonstrating some skilful runs. This resulted in the Year 10s winning their league. Well done girls.

Congratulations to all the girls who took part in both activities. Cookstown High School would like to thank Ian Hughes and Ruth Brown for helping to coach and to MUSA and Rainey Endowned for hosting the tournaments.
