The petite lifter retained her Adult Sportsperson of the Year title after another stellar 12 months - topped off with yet another world record.

Sharon drew gasps from the Braid Centre audience when she revealed that in the Irish Drug-Free Powerlifting Association single lift championships, she lifted a staggering 100 kilograms - a feat made even more remarkable by the fact that she only weighed 50kg herself at the time!

That was a new world record in her class and another entry on the modest 57-year-old’s CV.

“I have a good trainer in Felix McAlinden,” said Sharon. “I train three times a week for a couple of hours each time, getting pushed all the time.

Sharon’s next target is the Irish qualifiers - where she hopes to “lift more than 100kg”

Also short-listed: Johnny Steede (athletics); Anthony O’Rawe (boxing).
