SPORTS AWARDS: Brigid claims inaugural veterans' award

Brigid Quinn continues to defy her age to become the first winner of the inaugural Veterans' award.

The Ballymena Runners athlete has been winning her age category in virtually every race she enters on the local racing scene for the past 20 years.

Brigid has, at some point, been ranked in the top 10 athletes in her age group for 800m, 1500m, Parkrun, 5 mile, 10k, half marathon in the UK over the last decade.

Brigid, who received her award from Jenny Lusty and Lyndsay Short, of sponsors Lifyestyle Fitness, has completed 60 marathons since she took up running in 1981 - four of these in 2015 but her prowess isn’t solely restricted to the 26-mile discipline. She also represented Northern Ireland at the British cross-country championships in November, achieving a bronze medal.

In typically understated fashion, Brigid said: “I’m still going and that is the main thing.”

Also short-listed: Drew Cochrane (golf).
