SPORTS AWARDS: Coaching is '˜neigh' problem to modest Gary

Modest Gary Marshall insisted that all the credit for his Coach of the Year award should go to his riders and horses.

Gary is a Showjumping Ireland Development Squad coach for North/South Ireland and last year also became a Horse Sport Ireland-appointed tutor to instruct coaches wishing to attain his level.

Gary, who received his award from Michael Smyth, of sponsors Wrightbus, has competed in Britain, Europe and America in his own career but now coaches and brings on young horses from his Kells base.

Gary works with high performance riders and horses competing at Grand Prix level and also teaches at more novice levels.

Gary said: “It’s fantastic for me but they (riders) are the ones who do all the work.”

Also short-listed: Seamus McAleenan (hurling/camogie); Tony McAvoy (boxing).
