SPORTS AWARDS: Sporting Performance - Aaron Swan (cycling)

AARON Swan’s efforts in cycling through the pain barrier to win the All-Ireland under-15 time trial championship saw him win the Sporting Performance of the Year award.

The Clough teenager arrived at the event in Limerick on the back of a gruelling schedule of races in Europe and feeling fatigued.

But despite his tiredness, and the fact he was on restricted gearing as an under-16 competitor, he produced an astonishing physical performance of 110 pedal revolutions per minute, while his heart rate averaged 197 beats per minute.

“It was a matter of digging in deep,” admitted Aaron.

“It was the hardest gear I could push and I knew I wasn’t going to last the whole weekend so I put all my efforts into the one race and it paid off,” added Aaron, who has targeted the Youth Olympics in Holland this year as one of his biggest goals.

Also short-listed: Steven Workman (cycling); Ballymena Bowling Club men’s triples, Ballymena Bowling Club ladies’ fours, Ballymena Bowling Club men’s pairs (all bowls).
