SPORTS AWARDS: St Louis hurlers reflect on historic success

St Louis Grammar School senior '˜A' hurlers' efforts in securing the biggest accolade in a generation earned them the School Sporting Performance award.

The Cullybackey Road boys landed the coveted Mageean Cup for only the second time in October and the first success in the competition for 27 years.

In front of a crowd of almost 4,000 spectators, St Louis overcame St Mary’s Grammar, Belfast, to win the sought-after trophy.

As a result, no fewer than six of the team collected All Star awards prior to Christmas - a feat achieved only once previously in the history of Ulster Schools’ GAA. The boys will now attempt to add the All-Ireland title this month.

“It’s been all go all year, but it has been a year to remember,” said team member Conor Gillan, who received the award from Kenny Donnelly, of sponsor Halfords.

Also short-listed: Katie Agnew (triathlon); Ballymena Academy showjumping team (equestrian).
