Springwell duo compete in Ards

BRYAN Edgar and Johnny Wilson ran the Ards Half Marathon on Friday evening.

Conditions were good but a little windy. This was race five in Athletics NI’s Half Marathon Grand Prix and attracted a field of over 700 athletes.

Bryan ran well to finish third MO45 in a time of 1:23:03 while Johnny came home in 1:33:35.

The fourth race in the NIMRA Championship series took place on Saturday over the Slieve Bearnagh route.

The race route was short but intensive over four miles, with three climbs over mountains of heights 708m, 739m and 687m.

Springwell had three representatives at the race. First home was Gerry O’Doherty in 62:22 followed by Chris Millar who hobbled over the line in 63:45 after damaging ligaments on the last bend and Gillian Wasson in 73:23.

The penultimate race in the Furey Insurances 5K Series was held at Carndonagh on wet and windy Wednesday evening.

Springwell’s Gemma Turley came home third in the ladies event in 19:36.

Chris Millar finished 16th in 18:22 closely followed by Gerry O’Doherty 18:35.

Holly Clarke and Ashley Cairns travelled to Tullamore to represent Ulster at the Irish Schools Tailtann Games.

Ashley finished sixth in the Boy’s 800m in a time of 2.03.03. Holly was a member of the Ulster 100m relay team which finished third in 49.0.

KK McArthur Half Marathon & 10K, Dervock Playing Fields, Saturday, July 24 at 2.00pm

NFU Mutual 5Mile Road Race and 1K Fun Run, Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre, Ballymoney, Friday, July 30 at 6.15pm 1K and 7.00pm main race.
