Springwell enjoy success at Surf ‘n’ Turf

Springwell athletes had a very successful day at Born 2 Run’s Surf ‘n’ Turf North at Benone Beach on Saturday taking seven of the twelve podium places.

The competitors had the choice of Half Marathon or 10K, both races started and finished with sections of sandy beach, with a tough road route sandwiched in between.  

In the Half Marathon, Foyle Valley’s Pius McIntyre stole the headlines, winning in 1:24:42.  Springwell’s Peter Cromie was second in 1:26:07, while his club mate Colin Loughery secured the final podium place in 1:34:32. Springwell’s Stephen Fillis ran 1:36:45 in the Half Marathon.

There was no upset in the ladies 13.1 mile race, with Springwell’s ultra specialist Fran McFadden taking top honours crossing the line in 1:43:32.  Gillian Cordner (Seapark AC) followed in 1:46:49, with Ursula Campbell (Unattached) third in 1:47:29.

Springwell’s Rhodri Jones finished second in 36:56 and Derry City Track Club’s Cathal McLaughlin completed the top three in 37:10.

In the ladies race Springwell’s Ciara Toner cruised to victory in 41:37, which not only saw her finish in first place, but an outstanding 5th place overall.  

Fellow Springwell ladies Kerrie McIlmoyle (47:14) and Catherine Bell-Allen (48:22) took second place and third place respectively.

Springwell Catherine Byers 58:49 (PB) and Lorraine Abernethy 1:06:14 also completed the 10K.

DAVAGH FOREST 10 MILE TRAIL

Sperrin Harriers and Magherafelt Harriers joined forces to host the inaugural running of their Davagh Forest 10 mile trail race on Saturday. In near perfect conditions, close to seventy athletes enjoyed the scenic route.

Springwell’s sole representative at the race was Peter Fleming who completed the 10 mile course in 1:37:01.

LES JONES MEMORIAL

On Friday evening, over two hundred athletes descended on the Mary Peters Track in Belfast for the annual Les Jones Memorial 10K, an event hosted by Athletics NI and sponsored by ChampionChip Ireland.

The 6.2 mile course started and finished on the track and took in the roads, paths and trails in close by.

The major prize winners where Brendan Teer (East Down AC) 33:10 and Teressa Duffy 39:29.

Springwell’s Gemma Turley finished fourth in the ladies race in 41:30 and team mate Jim Platt was first M70 in 50:58.
