Springwell runners compete in North Coast 10K and 5K

Springwell Runners made the short journey to Portrush on Thursday 2 July for the North Coast 10K and supporting 5K.

The event was organised to raise funds for the work of the Sports Academy George in South Africa.

The charity use sport to reach out to under privileged children from township communities. Both races started on the East Strand with the 5K an out and back course to the Whiterocks.

At the end of beach the 10K runners made their way up to the Royal Court Hotel, returning to Portrush past the Royal Portrush Golf Club, back onto the promenade, then along the coast to Ramore Head. They went up and over Ramore Head and back to finish on the beach. 

Richard Johnston led the runner’s home in 35:34. Springwell’s Ciara Toner held off a challenge from teammate Sonia Knox to finish first lady in 39:57.

Sharon Bingham came home in 32:01. Springwell’s Gemma Turley was the first lady home at the Glenullin 10K on Friday 2 July in a time of 41:47.

Ballymena Runners Alex Brennan led the men home. Also competing from Springwell where Aidan Devine, Warren McIlmoyle, Kevin McLean, Paul Irwin and David Boorman. im Breen was first M60 at the Greyabbey 10K on Friday evening (10 July) in a time of 40:58. The event was hosted by the Northern Ireland Civil Service Athletic Club (NISAC). Willowfield Harriers man Neil Weir led the field home in 34:29 the first lady was Sandra Grimason (Ballydrain Harriers) in 41:26.

In the associated 5K race, North Belfast Harriers athletes took the top prizes Kent Swann led the men home in 17:05 and Roisin Hughes the ladies in 19:43.

Springwell’s Dale Corbett ran 10.06.96 in the 3000m at the Letterkenny International Track Meet on Friday 10 July.

While on holiday in Fairfax County, Virginia, USA Catherine Pinkerton-Moore and Gary Moore managed to fit in a couple of races. Catherine ran the Firecracker 5K in Reston completing the course in 23:26 and Gary ran the Fairfax Half Marathon in 1:35:08.

DERVOCK

All roads head to Dervock on Saturday 18 July for the Kennedy Kane McArthur Festival of Running. The 10K starts at 10.45am and the Half Marathon, which is part of the Pure Running Half Marathon Series at 11.00am. Pack collection and entries will be taken from 4.00pm to 8.30pm on Friday evening and from 8.00am to 10.30am on Saturday at the Community Centre, Knock Road. There will be the usual carnival atmosphere and post race entertainment.
