Springwell runners in action at SSE Airtricity Walled City Marathon

A large contingent of Springwell Runners and supporters travelled to Derry on Sunday for the 3rd annual running of the well organised SSE Airtricity Walled City Marathon; the event has now been installed as a permanent fixture after its successful debut during the UK City of Culture programme 2013.

Reigning Champion Freddy Sittuk (Raheny Shamrock AC) successfully defended his title as he recorded a new course record of 2:22:34. Dublin based Kenyan Peter Somba claimed second place in 2:25:26, just ahead of City of Derry athlete Greg Roberts who crossed the line in 2:25:38 for third place.

In the ladies race, pre-race favourite Pauline Curley (Tullamore Harriers) led from the off and eventually cruised to victory in an excellent 2:47:25; a course record.  Kenyan runner Selinah Kangogo missed a sub three hour finish but made up for it with the runners up prize in 3:01:28, with Collette McCourt (Dub Runners) third in 3:12:48. Springwell’s Glenda Whiteside had an excellent run finishing fourth in 3:18:22.
