Springwell runners in action at the weekend

With Northern Ireland experiencing a dramatic turn around in the weather, Springwell runners turned out in their numbers to enjoy their favourite past-time in the beautiful balmy running conditions.

There was action on several fronts from the weekly parkruns, to trail races, cross country and road races, all seeing participation from our ever enthusiastic and talented members.

Saturday 23rd saw action at the Drum Manor 10k Trail Race and the parkrun scene, while Sunday saw Springwell athletes travelling to Dundalk to compete in the GloHealth AAI National Masters and Intermediate X-Coubntry Championships and also the North West Triathlon Clubs’ 5k race series.

There was also a great day of XC running during the Schools District C Qualifying Races at the UUC on Thursday 21st January, with upwards of 40 Springwell juniors running for their schools. District Champions for the club were Jack Culbertson, Minor Boys, Andrew Gordon ,Junior Boys, Niamh Carr, Intermediate Girls and Aife McSheffrey, Senior Girls, with at least 20 other Club juniors qualifying for the Ulster Schools finals next month. A special mention to for Abigail McBroom, who has been out for the last three months with injury, back running only a few weeks and still managing to qualify for the finals.

GLOHEALTH AAI NATIONAL MASTERS AND INTERMEDIATE X-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Springwell Running Club had two representatives participating in this all-Ireland competion in Dundalk, with a total of 255 competitors finishing the race.

Bryan Edgar and Gerry O’Doherty were our two representatives, as part of a County Londonderry/Derry composite team, with the remainder coming from City of Derry Spartans.

Bryan ran strongly to finish 23rd in the MV50 category while Gerry had an excellent run, finishing in 29:19 and clinching second place in the MV60 category.

These excellent performances from our boys enabled their County team to finish a fine 4th Overall in the competition with, Bryan and Gerry being the first two home for their team.

NORTH WEST TRIATHLON CLUB WINTER 5K SERIES

On Sunday 24th, in the third round of this very popular series of 5K road races, held in Londonderry/Derry, the Springwell Club had four representatives take to the start line with first home being Aiden Devine running strongly to finish in an excellent 18:49, followed by Gerard Mullan, recording a terrific PB of 19:23, then Connor McStravick in 21:04 and finally Llimavady Newcomer of the Year award winner Dee Boorman in 23:07.
