Squash programme at Cookstown Leisure Centre

THE Squash Programme at Cookstown Leisure Centre is delivered as part of the Active Communities Programme which is a Sport Northern Ireland Lottery Funded initiative that aims to increase participation in sport and physical recreation in communities throughout Northern Ireland.

On a recent online poll, squash was rated by a group of experts as the world’s healthiest sport.

Active Communities Racquet Sports coach Gareth Brown said that “Squash and racquetball are fantastic sports for anyone who wants an alternative to the gym. It develops an excellent combination of speed, fitness, racket skills and competitive edge that make it a real fun challenge for anyone who wants to try something new.”

As part of his Active Communities role Gareth will run an introductory course in Cookstown Leisure Centre over May and June. “The purpose is to provide an opportunity for children between 11-16 and adults to come and try squash. Participants will receive coaching in the various aspects of the game and, of course, we will have some fun along the way as well.”

The staff in Cookstown Leisure Centre hope that by continuing to work with Gareth and Ulster Squash it will be possible to re-establish a club based in the leisure centre for both kids and adults after the summer.

Newly appointed Ulster Squash Club Development Officer Dorothy Armstrong said that “this introductory course provides a great opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to come and experience squash in a light hearted but structured environment with guidance from coaches. It is a great way to get people started in the sports. I would really encourage anyone to come along and have a go.”

Of course if you want to improve in any sport, it’s best to join a club and compete against players of a similar or slightly higher standard than yourself. The club environment will also provide good coaching to refine your skills and improve your game, and is a great way of meeting people.
