St Macartan’s of Monaghan moved one step closer to a successful defence of the prize despite a strong St Ronan’s performance.

The Lurgan players dominated the opening half-hour spell but lacked the finishing touch and Shea Geraghty’s disallowed goal prevented St Ronan’s from pushing clear.

Eugene Doran proved inventive but St Ronan’s dropped short of an overall reward, with a final-quarter fightback a late highlight.

Rioghan Meehan, Shea Geraghty, Tiernan Kelly and Lee Haughian added points on the board as St Ronan’s hit half-time down by 2-2 to 0-6.

St Macartan’s pushed clear across the third quarter following four points without reply before the introduction of Rioghan Crawford off the sidelines. The substitute found the net on 53 minutes and Tiernan Kelly added to the St Ronan’s tally.

Jack Haddock, Adam Loughran and Jack Lenehen proved key players for St Ronan’s.

This St Ronan’s squad can now turn the focus over the next few seasons to MacRory Cup play.
