Stephen's super Saturday Stableford at Portstewart

SATURDAY saw the end of the winter fairway protection on the Strand Course at Portstewart and Stephen McAuley took full advantage of it by romping round to score 44 points, eight under his handicap of 16.

He had birdies at 7 and 13 and finished with a good par to keep the momentum going. Friends of Stephen at Norfolkline will need earplugs after a round like that.

Two back was David Ilsley on 42 off 15. David a birdie at 7 to go out in 24, a further birdie at 14 helped but a number of single pointers on the way back meant 18 points and second place. Obviously, with that great score, David has been ignoring the advice of his father-in-law, Captain Derek Agnew, to good effect.

Derek also had 24 points out birdying 2, 6 and 8 but age took its toll and he returned with 16 for a total of 40 just outside the prizes.

Keith Johnston and Dominic Loughrey scored 41 each with Keith having the better finish and taking third place.

Next Saturday sees the start of the competition season with the qualifying round for the Sports Trust competition.

The winner of this will represent Portstewart Golf Club in the final along with the Match and Handicap convenor.
