And he will line up in a quality U17 1,500 metres with a place in the Irish squad for the upcoming Schools International up for grabs.

Due to a clash of dates the annual Tailteann Games meet has been moved from the weekend so it’s a Friday morning trip to the Santry Stadium for the Lumen Christi student who has impressed at both school and club level already this season.

While he has been racing regularly, he is primed for a big one tomorrow afternoon and, conditions permitting, could go close to the four minute barrier in what should be a hot race.

Meanwhile the NI Masters Track & Field championships is set for the Mary Peters track in Belfast on Saturday with a big local contingent travelling in search of honours.

M75 Frank Stewart will be the oldest local Master in action in a meeting which caters for athletes from 35+, in five year age bands. F55 Danea Herron, M45 Cathal McLaughlin and F45 Jackie McMonagle will be others to look out for as a comprehensive range of track and field events will be contested.

On the road the Aghyaran 5K has a 7.30pm start on Saturday night at the county Tyrone border venue and Saturday evening it’s down the road to Buncrana for the popular annual 10K.

This one has developed significantly in recent years and the 6.30pm start should see good numbers line up. Entries for both will be taken on the night as usual.

Further afield several Ulster athletes are in the Irish senior team for the European Athletics Team Championship in Crete over the weekend.

This is the second tier of European competition and the Irish squad which includes Letterkenny man Mark English, who

goes in the 800m, and the hopeful target is to grab one of the promotion places and access to the Premier level of European competition.
