Stormont win for Murray

BALLYBOLEY'S Christine Murray had another good result at the weekend when the County Antrim Harrier had a surprise win in the Northern Ireland Civil Service Cross Country Championships held at the Stormont grounds in Belfast.

With the course muddy in places, conditions were nevertheless quite good for all of the participants given the horrid weather of late.

From the sound of the whistle that signalled the start of the mixed Men’s and Women’s race, Murray started off quite brightly and on the first of the two-lap race was running quite strongly, but her early exertions soon caught up with her and curtailed her enthusiasm on lap two, forcing her to ease up, but her renowned competitive edge once again kicked in on the latter stages, and holding off a strong challenge from a couple of rivals, she eventually crossed the finish line after 3 miles in 23:19 clinching not only the NICS Championship, but also the 1st Female Veteran spot.
