St.Patricks, Maghera prepare for the College Run

St Patrick’s Maghera are in the final stages of preparation for this weekend’s big cycle event which has attracted a large number of cyclists for a tour of towns closest to the college.

Part of 50th Anniversary celebrations, cyclists will choose a 27 mile or 50 mile route, visiting Draperstown, Desertmartin, Magherafelt, Castledawson, Bellaghy, Gulladuff, Portglenone, Kilrea, Garvagh and Swatragh before returning.

A short ‘spin’ for experienced cyclists from the local clubs and others from Ballycastle, Dunloy, Crossmaglen, Carrickmore and Coalisland, but perhaps more of a tour for those ‘less experienced’ riders.

St Patricks had an official launch in Walsh’s Hotel and the college’s sporting background was reflected with the attendance of five of the school’s six All-Ireland winning captains and it is this history of sporting challenge which St.Patrick’s hope will appeal to local cyclists.

And there is the small matter of the upcoming MacRory Cup Final which will no doubt engage many conversations en route for and the past pupils of the College taking part.

The event begins with registration at St Patrick’s from 8.30am, bikers departing in one big group at 9.30am. A refreshment stop is targeted for the car park at the Castledawson roundabout at 11am, depending on how well the legs have lasted the first stage, while there will also be refreshments available in St.Patrick’s when the cyclists have completed their chosen route. The route will be fully marshalled at all major junctions with lead car and First Aid vehicles also part of the tour.

Commemorative tee-shirts have been commissioned for the day and can be collected at registration. A number of local businesses have very generously contributed sponsorship to cover the cost and the school is grateful to all those people who have been so supportive.
