Success at NI Schools Championships

CAI, Dalriada and Killowen Primary school are pleased to report no less than 11 medals at this year’s Northern Ireland School’s Judo Championships which were held at Campbell College in Belfast last weekend.

This is an annual schools event where players represented their individual school rather the Coleraine Judo Club, of which they are all members. From Dalriada, Holly Duncan won a bronze medal and Ben Marks a silver at their respective weight categories. The newly formed CAI Judo Club, which is a branch of the Coleraine Club and under the guidance of CAI Teacher and black belt 2nd Dan Mr Ross Scott brought home six medals.

These were a silver medal by Scott Greatorex and bronze medals by Sam Abernethey, Dylan Irwin, David Greatorex, Bradley Jackson and Daniel McCreadie. At the Primary School event Amy Woodall representing Killowen PS was the star of the Coleraine team by winning a gold medal in the under 30kg event. Other success from Killowen was Brooke Walls who took the silver at 44kg.

In addition to this success a combined team from the Coleraine Area won the bronze medal. Especially noteworthy was the performance of Killowen’s Joel Duncan who finished in 5th place after a grueling day of competing against larger and more experienced players. This was the first ever competition that these players have ever participated in, so a big congratulation is due.

Readers interested to taking up this exciting Olympic combat sport for competition, self-defense or just good fun should come along to Coleraine Leisure Centre any Friday evening and meet our coaches who will arrange a suitable class. Although the junior Club will be stopping from the end of May, training for more senior players will continue throughout the summer from 8.30to 9.30 on Friday evenings.
