Success for Junior Judo Club at Belfast competition

Members of the Coleraine Judo Club’s Junior Section travelled to Belfast last weekend for what is known as a ‘FUNdamentals’ competition which is an event designed for judo novices under the age of 16yrs and was hosted at Campbell College Belfast.

From the club Caitlin McMahon won a convincing Gold medal while Jack Matthews, Sam Clements and Emma Kennedy all won well deserved Silver medals.

This was an especially impressive performance as all the Coleraine players had clear wins and some against more experienced judoka.

It was also Sam and Emma’s first ever competition, so a big congratulations is due.

In addition to the competition there was a “Red Belt Rumble” for budding judoka who were under 8 years of age and comprised of a series of judo related games and exercises.

These events target young players because it is forbidden for children under the age of 8 to compete at judo.

This session was organised by visiting Coach Development Officer Dermot Heslop 6th Dan from the British Judo Association.

The Coleraine players attending this part of the day were Mairi Clements and Mark Kennedy who both received participation medals. Matside coaches supporting the Coleraine players were Rebecca Cuckoo and Paul Price while Club Secretary Peter Cuckoo was officiating in the capacity of Competition Recorder,
