Success for Wallace High at badminton finals

WALLACE High School enjoyed a successful day at the Ulster Schools’ badminton finals last week, picking up several winners and runners up awards in the event hosted by the Lisburn Racquets Club.

Pride of place must go to the Year 8 girls team who won their cup and were runners up in the league and also the junior girls team who won the Division 2 league and will now represent the Lisburn school in the Irish National Championships next Wednesday in Dublin. Year 8 team members were Megan and Faye Getty, Megan Quigg and Celina Robinette, whilst the junior girls team consisted of Evie Dornan, Amy Sutton, Georgia Hewitt and Joanna Davis who defeated Bloomfield Collegiate in their final.

Thomas Cherry, Peter Murphy, Chris Dumigan and Thomas Aughey were members of the Year 8 boys team who competed superbly and were cup and league runners up, whilst the senior girls team (Alannah Stephenson, Lauren Berryman, Cara McBride and Rebecca Baird) were Division 1 and cup runners up also.

Individually Year 12 pupils Ryan Getty and Alannah Stephenson have achieved great success recently as they picked up three National under 17 badminton titles in Dublin. Ryan played some great badminton to reach all three finals. He was unlucky to lose out in three sets in the singles final, but won the mixed title with his partner Rachael Darragh. The Nationals come at the end of a successful season where he won the Munster and Leinster singles titles.

Alannah picked up both the National singles and doubles titles. She played consistent badminton and defeated her doubles partner Rachael Darragh before combining to win the doubles. Both Ryan and Alannah now look forward to playing for Ulster in the upcoming interprovincials in Dublin and wish to thank Sport Lisburn for their continued support.

Congratulations should also go to Year 8 pupil Chris Dumigan who has been chosen to represent the Ulster under 13 squash squad in Dublin and who was a key member of the Year 8 badminton team last week.
