Success for young stars from Banbridge Junior Tennis Club

The under 18 girls from Banbridge Junior Tennis Club travelled to Downpatrick in the semi-finals of the Challenge trophy recently, always a tricky fixture, but came away with a 5-1 victory, putting them into the final against Lurgan.

Having beaten Lurgan in a close league match, Banbridge had the advantage of home courts at Banbridge Academy.

Matches, however, didn’t go to plan as the home side were 2-0 down after their doubles.

All credit to the plucky Banbridge girls as they knuckled down to take the four singles games and in turn the match 4-2.

This is the second year running that the under 18 girls have won the Belfast and District league and Challenge Trophy.

In similar syle the under 18 boys delivered the goods in their equivalent.

Beating Downpatrick in the quarter - finals, they then faced a strong St.Pats side from Newtownards in the semi - finals. After some hard hitting games Banbridge triumphed 6-0 to face Hilden in the final.

Again, a very competitive match went the way of Banbridge, 4-2 and for the second year in succession they also won the league and Challenge Trophy, the first time this has ever been acheived by an Ulster club.

Coach, Cyril McClune, would like to thank his loyal players and parents, along with Raymond Pollock, principal of Banbridge Academy, for the use of the school’s five tennis courts during the league and cup campaigns.

Whilst last year’s successes were dedicated to the late Pat Hamilton, this year’s are dedicated to the late Norma McClune.
