Successful bird show

BALLYMONEY Ornithological Association held their Annual Open Show in St James’ Church Hall and it was an outstanding success with exhibitors coming across Northern Ireland and as far away as Donegal and Irvine in Scotland.

There were a total of 1,200 exhibits and winners were as follows:

Best Norwich Canary in Show - Dr Richard Wilson, Templepatrick; Best Gloster Canary in Show - Mr A Crowe, Larne; Best Novice Gloster Canary in Show - Mr W Lyttle, Ballymena; Best Yorkshire Canary in Show - Mr S Nicholl, Ballycastle; Best Novice Yorkshire Canary in Show - Mr A McFarland, Ballyclare.

Best Border Canary in Show - Mr L McFetridge, Antrim; Best Novice Border Canary in Show - Mr L McFetridge.

Best Pet Bird - Miss Katy Donnell, Ballymoney; Best British Bird - Mr S Stewart, Ramelton, Co Donegal; Best Novice British Bird - Mr D Ramsey, Burnfoot, Co Donegal; Best Budgerigar in Show - Mr D Boyd, Carryduff; Best Foreign Bird in Show - Messrs Young & Newtown, Ballymoney; Best Zebra Finch - Mrs M McAuley, Ahoghill; Best Novice Adult Zebra Finch - Mrs M McAuley; Best Bengalese in Show - Messrs Young & Newtown, Ballymoney.

Best Colour Canary - Mr D McCool, Limavady; Best Novice Colour Canary - D Ramsey & Sons, Burnfoot, Co Donegal.

Best Irish Fancy Canary in Show - Mr T Barr, Muff, Co Donegal; Best Novice Irish Fancy in Show - Mr T Barr; Best Fife Fancy in Show - Mr S Barkley, Ballymoney; Best Novice Flighted Fife Fancy in Show - Mr B Annett, Kilkeel, Co Down; Best Novice U/F Fife Fancy in Show - Mr N Brogan, Toomebridge; Best Scots Fancy in Show - Mrs A Cook, Irvine, Scotland.

In the absence of Mr and Mrs H C Pollock, both of whom were unable to be present due to illness, the awards were presented by Ballymoney Deputy Mayor, Alderman Cecil Cousley, who was presented with a gift by Miss Katy Donnell, grand-daughter of Association member Mr D Wright.

Members extend their good wishes to both Mr and Mrs Pollock for a speedy return to good health.

The Association wishes to thank the following: Ballymoney Borough Council for their generous grant; The Kirk Session of St James’ Church for the use of their halls; The judges, some of whom travelled from England; Exhibitors who came from far and near; Firms and individuals who gave donations.

Lastly, the secretary would like to thank all the members who worked so hard to make the Show a success.
