Successful time for Lisburn swimmers at Carlton event

LISBURN City Swimming Club had a successful time at the Carlton Irish Long Course Championships and Irish Olympic Trials last Saturday with excellent results from the nine swimmers.

Wednesday started well with Rachel Smyth and Bethany Carson in the 200 free with Bethany taking bronze in a time of 2.04.26 and Rachel in a new pb 2.12.57. Chloe Richards also swam in the 100 backstroke finals. Peter Sands, swimming the best meet since last summer, swam a pb in the 200 fly in the heats and improved it again in the final (2.22.24).

Thursday saw results again for Rachel and Beth in the 100 free semis. Rachel Smyth, Rachel Bethel, Chloe Richards and Sarah O’Callaghan, the 4 x 200 freestyle relay team took gold in an electric finish against Team ESB winning by just 0.72s.

Promising swimmer, Alexandra Hunter swam a pb in the 100m freestyle (1.04.95), as did Sarah O’Callaghan (1.05.15).

Peter Sands, swam another pb in the 400individual medley coming in 6th in the final (4.57.16)

Friday’s session started well, with Paige McKeown, at her first long course meet, reached the 50 Backstroke semis setting new long course personal best times for this event as well as in the 50 freestyle. Bethany took gold in the 100 free final (57.34). Another promising young swimmer, 11-year-old Rachel Bethel, swam in the Final of the 400 free, achieving a British Age Qualifying Group time (4.46.02), adding to the 100 free British Age Group Qualifying time (1.02.79).

Bethany, Rachel Smyth and Natasha Pollock all swam in the 100 fly preliminaries with Bethany breaking a 16-year record of Michelle Smith by 0.01s (1.00.58). They all made the semi finals.

Chloe also achieved her National Youth Development Squad time in the 200 backstroke. Peter, whose form in really returning, swam a personal best in the 200 backstroke, breaking a club record (2.18.04) and came 6th in the final.

Last day saw both Chloe and Peter getting into the 200 individual medley finals as well as Bethany, Rachel Smyth and Natasha in the 100 fly finals with Bethany taking Gold (1.00.53) breaking her own record by 0.05s.

This is an excellent set of results for the Lisburn City Swimming Club Team, which is in training for the Dave McCullough/Tri Nations meet at the end of April in Dublin.

Good luck to Beth who is swimming in the British Olympic Trials in the London Aquatic Centre on Monday.
