Successful week for Springwell

The re-scheduled AES Larne Half Marathon took place on Saturday, and conditions could not have been more different to those that led to the postponement of the original event in March.

In glorious sunshine, 900 plus runners took to the start line, which was situated on the picturesque Antrim Coastline with views reaching as far away as Scotland. Freddy Sittuk (Kenya) crossed the line in 1:08:20 to win the race in a new course record.  North Belfast Harriers’ Alan O’Hara came home in second place in 1:08:38 (PB) with Gary O’Hanlon (Clonliffe Harriers) third in 1:09:29.

There was sunshine and light winds but the high tide at 7.00am meant soft sand for the Portrush Parkrun on Saturday morning.

John Mathews on his first outing at Portrush was the first runner home in 19:27. First lady was Springwell’s Sonia Knox in a PB time of 21:25.

On Wednesday evening, nearly three hundred runners participated in the Ballymena Runners organised Fairhill 5 Mile Road Race and associated Fun Run.The fast and flat 5 mile course consisted of two laps, which covered the town centre streets and a small section in the Ecos Park.

Keith Shiels, led the field home breaking the tape in 25:21, closely followed by Richard Johnston in second place in 25:33 and local man Jarleth Falls third in 26:41.

Springwell’s inform Gemma Turley led the ladies home crossing the line in 31:11. North Belfast’s Cathy McCourt followed close behind in second place, clocking 31:20, while Ballymena based Larne AC lady Geraldine Quigley was third in 32:24.
